Rue and the Story That Got Away

Rue was telling the very best story. It had a boat, a whale, and a hat that could fly.

Rue got to the exciting part, opened both paws wide, and then… stopped.

“Oh no,” whispered Rue. “I have lost the ending. It got away.”

Rue looked under the ferns. Rue looked behind the log. No ending anywhere.

A good friend sat down in the leaves. “What if we make a new one?” Rue’s ears popped straight up.

“The hat flies home,” said Rue. “And the whale sings,” said a good friend. “And the boat gets a name!”

They named the boat Buttercup, which is a wonderful name for a boat.

The ending they built together was sillier, longer, and much, much better than the lost one.

“I could not find my ending,” said Rue, taking a bow, “so we made a better one together.”
